Create a Kitchen Hub

Thursday, 02nd September 2010

The kitchen is at the heart of most of our homes, but before you know it important phone messages and keys can get lost amid piles of the kids' homework and unopened post. Allocate some space, however small, to setting up a practical kitchen hub that's easy for the whole family to use, and has a place for everything. A dedicated cabinet or side table is ideal, but a section of an island unit or countertop can also work well if properly planned.

Where's the best spot?
If you have the space, invest in a dedicated side cabinet or a small table for your kitchen hub. Look for one with a decent amount of shelving beneath it for heavy phonebooks, and a couple of narrow drawers for spare pens and birthday cards. Avoid cabinets with deep drawers, as they're just a magnet for clutter.
There should be enough space on top to house the telephone, the all-important message pad and a jar of pens.
If there's no room in your kitchen for an extra piece of furniture, convert a section of the countertop or island unit into your kitchen hub, but make sure there's enough storage above or below it for paperwork, bills and phonebooks.

Use wall space
A pin or magnet board mounted on the wall is the perfect spot to hang important paperwork that everyone can see in a flash. A list of emergency numbers - doctor, dentist, everyone's mobile numbers, the school and vet - should all be included. You can also stick invitations and school notices here.
A wall-mounted calendar that has separate sections for everyone's itineraries will allow you to keep track of who's going where. Some also include a section for birthdays, which means that you'll never be late with that birthday card again.

Helpful hooks
A series of hooks attached on the wall will allow you to hang keys, dog leads and other paraphernalia that needs to be grabbed in an instant. Label keys clearly, and aim to get a second set cut for houseguests or those irritating times when your main set goes astray.

Post tray
Rather than stuffing incoming post into drawers or letting it spread across countertops, invest in an attractive woven or fabric-covered in-tray for letters and bills. You may find that you need two or three trays, particularly if you have post coming in for several members of the family or store outgoing post here too. Another alternative is to mount in-trays vertically on the wall, which will help keep your worksurface clear.

I find that it's a good idea to plan your kitchen around the storage space that you need. If you don't have proper places for your cutlery and crockery and flatware, you can forget about having space in your kitchen to cook much less to congregate at!
